BuzzWords is a simple card based group activity. It is an extremely versatile development tool that can be used as an icebreaker, energiser, introductory, reinforcement and learning review activity. Many organisations suffer an overuse of jargon which can be confusing to outsiders. But whereas jargon has negative connotations, we have designed BuzzWords to be a ‘creative abuse’ of the English language for the purposes of helping people illuminate issues, concepts and realities in their working environment. As far as we know, the majority of the words in this activity are complete nonsense! However, players are invited to take these words and create relevant, practical meaning from them with humour and originality. Buzzwords creates this low threat, highly creative platform to explore just about any subject area and draw out real practical personalised learning.

 

The objective of this activity is to stimulate creative and insightful discussion, enabling your workshop participants to reflect on their individual and collective knowledge across a diverse range of subject areas.

This activity will enrich just about any workshop

 

Encouraged to apply their imagination with a degree of “tongue in cheek” humour, delegates are invited to take the words on their BuzzWords cards and develop subject relevant, practical definitions to present back to the main group. 

 

You may discover from one delegate that the “Skonser Cycle” illustrates the four phases experienced in conflict resolution. And from another that “To Dipple” is a collective term for micro management.

 

In your role as an effective facilitator you deepen the observation and ask “What makes a person become a dippler?”; “In what situations could you find yourself dippling?”; “What are the effects of dippling?” 

 

The uses to which BuzzWords can be put are limited only by a facilitator’s imagination. The facilitators guide provides some ideas to get you started. These cover areas such as;

 

BuzzWords as an icebreaker - BuzzWords integrates well with most types of introductory sessions. This exercise can smooth introductions and lower apprehension when people don’t know one another well.

 

BuzzWords as an energiser - Energisers can be used at the start of a session or at any time when group energies appear to be dipping.

 

BuzzWords for learning review and reinforcement - At the end of a course or unit the facilitator can pass out cards to participants and ask them to present back answers to certain questions.
