Negotiation, arbitration, team work, communication
Simulation Game Overview
Team Target has been developed to offer an exciting and realistic simulation of what may be expected of anybody faced with the task of using their skills as a negotiator to meet the targets they and their team have been set. It also simulates the dilemmas experienced by those charged with deciding who will be the winners and losers in these emotionally charged situations.
‘Team Target’ is a unique training activity that simulates the negotiation influencing and communication. Until now, training in this field has been largely prescriptive, offering little opportunity to practise the complex skills required or to experience the conflicting emotions which negotiation and influencing typically arouse.
‘Team Target’ is a team-based, competitive exercise which rewards the achievement of targets against a background of changing pressures generated by resource availability, relative success, allocated responsibility and individual competence in a variety of roles. It offers the trainer the opportunity to control and influence the operating environment in order to place emphasis on appropriate aspects of team and individual performance.
Learning Outcomes
- The dynamics of ‘Team Target’ demand:
- performance to be measured against targets
- strategies and tactics that respond to change
- decisions on integrity and accountability in both negotiation and selling
- a recognition of the importance of inter-personal skills for negotiation
- an awareness of the long-term effects of current behaviour
- arbitrators to manage the balance between impartiality and self-interest.
How it works
Each team is provided with a 'Target Tray' indicating a series of 8 targets to be achieved during the course of the exercise. Targets are achieved by securing rods of the required value and displaying them on the target board. A limited number of rods of each value is available during each 'round' of the exercise and there will be competition for the same rods and therefore a requirement for structured negotiation. The exercise is competitive; the winning team being the one with the highest number of points at the end of the exercise. Team Target is a practical activity designed to allow each participant the opportunity to develop and practise their personal skills of negotiation and arbitration within a competitive context of team based strategy, tactics and sensitivity to market conditions. The in-built feedback and review structure allows each participant to offer and receive both peer and observer feedback on their performance as negotiator, arbitrator and participating team member.
Team Target in Training Programmes
Although the focus of Team Target is on developing skills in negotiation and arbitration, there are features of the exercise structure which support its inclusion in a wide range of other training situations.
- A demanding team based activity in team development training.
- A means of demonstrating variations in individual responses and styles.
- A vehicle for developing feedback and process review skills.
- A way of exploring the effects of competition on performance.
- As an illustration of the importance of flexibility as part of the planning process.
- A means of demonstrating the value of performance evaluation on future results.
Time Structures for Team Target There are three alternative ways in which a complete Team Target exercise may be time structured:
- Open Ended - the exercise is allowed to run for an unlimited time, finishing when the first team achieves or exceeds its eighth target.
- Finite - setting a cut-off time for the exercise and measuring scores to that point. This structure supports the inclusion of Team Target in highly structured and timetabled training events.
- Intermittent - the exercise is run over a longer period of time with other activities happening between rounds.
